This unique Scholarship enables you to visit the USA for 6 weeks to investigate a work / voluntary related topic of your choice. Its purpose was to honour Franklin Delano Roosevelt's significant contributions as the U.S. President during World War II and create a local tribute in his memory through scholarships. The Scholarship embodies the shared vision of closer collaboration and mutual understanding between nations.
At the time I applied, you could go for up to 3 months, so I chose to go for the full time so I could make the most of my visit. My topics of research were: i) How to increase community and youth engagement with wildlife and ii) understanding species re introduction programs. As part of my NRMT Scholarship I was able to travel to 12 states in 12 weeks, starting in Los Angeles and ending in New York. I met with researchers from a wide variety of organisations including Los Angeles Natural History Museum, San Diego Natural History Museum, Organization for Bat Conservation, Wolf Conservation Centre, Yale School of Environment, U.S Fish and Wildlife Service plus many more!
An aspect of the Scholarship, beyond the research, is to get involved in local culture and where possible stay with local people. This was at times daunting but so rewarding, I stayed with so many amazing people all across the U.S.A (and Canada) including past scholars, old friends, friends of friends, people from the Servas community and even stayed with a Roosevelt family member. Documenting this journey was the reason I started this website and blogging, which you can still see by going here.
