Mum's solo show Who Are You? opened this week and it has been a long time coming. It is a deeply personal yet outward-facing body of work that reflects her perspectives on life, identity and the world around her. A retrospective celebration of her evolving practice as an abstract painter, exploring emotion, mark-making and colour as expressive tools rather than literal representation. Much of her work responds to current social issues, environmental concerns and her own lived experiences, using paint to externalise feeling and invite viewers to make their own connections.
Seeing it all come together in the space was something else. We have been planning this for months, through treatment cycles and tired days and moments of doubt, and here it was on the walls. Her work. Her story. Her voice. Watching people move through the exhibition, stopping in front of pieces, asking questions, making their own connections with the work, was everything.
There is also a brilliant short interview about the show by Miheer Shetty, and you can find out more about Mum and her work at penelopefineartist.online.
She put herself out there through one of the hardest years of her life and the work spoke for itself.
